I admit it, creating an avatar is one of the last thing i did but, once I did, it literally transform everything. It helped me in so many ways and I really wish I sat down before to make one. Wihtout further due, here is why you need to make an avatar for your business.
What is an avatar?
An avatar is your perfect customer. It’s the ONE person you address yourself to when you write a blog post, record a podcast, write an email, etc… For example, my avatar is named Ryan. He is 38 years old, have a wife, 3 kids. He drive to work everyday and only have very little time to work on is online business. He needs easy to follow proven technique to succeed.
I have a whole documents on Ryan. Over 1000 words that describe who he is, what he do, what he love. I know Ryan very well and when i sit down to create content, I know exactly what he wants and needs.
I fell in the trap before. I was trying to reach everyone with my content. I didn’t have one avatar but many, too many. By trying to please everybody, the exact opposite effect was happening. I was reaching no one. When trying to adapt my message to every person reading my blog, my message was getting diluted with no purpose and focus.
The Ah! Ah! moment
Once I had create my avatar, everything changed. Decision that would have took me hours to debate was now being made in a split second. I knew exactly who I was talking to and what needed to be done.
It was like the fog lift off the road ahead and I could clearly see where I needed to go. No more guessing game or turing around.
Whenever i need to take a decision about anything, I just ask myself if that would be good for Ryan or not. Debating over a decision just doesnt happen anymore. Everything is clear as water. Ryan takes all the decision for me!
I dont want to be read only by Ryan but my message is now much more consistent and simple.
How do you build an avatar?
Take a piece of paper and think about one of your client. Your best customer. Maybe the one client that spent the most on your product or service. Or the one you had the most pleasure working with.
If you don’t have customer, take someone you know. Who do you want to reach with your message? Who would be that perfect blog reader, podcast listener or future client? It is usually easier to build your avatar around someone that actually exist.
Give him a name
I named my avatar Ryan. It could be is real name or you can make it up. It’s important that you name your avatar so you can put a face and relate with him. You need to FEEL is pain and really understand is challenges.
Write is life
Once you have a name, you can start to write. Open a note document and write as much as you can on is life. What does he do? What does he like? How does he get to work? What are is challenge? why does he use your product, service, read your blog, listen to your podcast, etc… You want to have between 500 – 1000 words. The more the better. If he actually exist, this part will be much more easier. You could directly ask him. If you don’t know the answer try making it up.
Go out and Conquer
Now that you have your avatar, anytime you write a blog post, just think about him. What does he wants to learn? How does he likes to get is information? What part of the journey is he? Does he needs helps from the start or he already know a lot of things?
It will transform your business like it did with me! Did you build your avatar yet? Let me know in the comment below!
